What a face! I love photographing pet headshots and portraits, but especially puppies. This little guy, Jackson, is about 8 weeks old and has lots of energy. He’s a Lab/Rottweiler mix, so it’s especially fun to make portraits that show just how little he is right now - he’s going to get big fast!

There are lots of great animals at Arizona Humane Society. I know everyone wants a puppy for Christmas but take a look at these sweet faces. I went to the Campus for Compassion at South Mountain earlier today, to help make sure these great dogs don’t get overlooked. My new project: Litrof Magazine

I am very excited to release the first issue of my new art magazine. Litrof is an art magazine for photographers. Really, though, it’s a magazine for anyone who wants to understand more about the creative process.

I wanted there to be a place where photography was considered alongside other contemporary art media. And I wanted to hear more from the artists themselves, not only view their work - I often felt as though I was missing part of the story. So here is that place, for those of us who want more, and want to learn more.

We were at the park yesterday shooting dog portraits as a fundraiser for Arizona Animal Welfare League. It was a beautiful day and we were able to raise a good amount for the animals. It was really great to get back to doing a simple studio shoot yesterday. A great model, a back-saving assist from Ryan - to whom I owe much thanks for setting up and moving around all the lighting equipment for me!- and one really cute puppy (Cody!) made it a lot of fun. I love photography.

ASU Art Museum Street Party

The 2nd Annual Street Party to benefit ASU Art Museum was last night in Phoenix and I had the chance to document it for them. It was a fun night and even though I'm really not an event photographer I think I got a few good images for them.

The bands were all excellent too - thanks to Source Victoria, the Market and Dry River Yacht Club for (not freaking out when I got on stage with them) coming out for the night! ASU Latin Jazz Combo was also there, and thank you to you guys too!, but I'm sorry I arrived after you played. Lots more photos of the event and more of the bands are on the museum's Flickr page.

If you've looked at this blog over the last few years, Luka Bear is no stranger to you. He came to me through a posting on the web - his previous people abandoned him and he needed some serious care. Luka and I had a very special bond and he became my closest friend. He was pretty old when I got him - we don't know how old exactly - but I'm glad that the four years he was with me were really good. Luka died of prostate cancer last August (2009). I really miss him. I'm not sure I can write a real conclusion to his DOGumentary, so here are just a few of the many photos I have of him. I'm so glad I have them, even the crappy iPhone photos. They help me celebrate the time I had with him.

Thought I'd show off the cards I just made. We photographed these earlier today in the studio on the cute new set I made this year for kids. The plan was to shoot only Cody on it, but he just wouldn't stay there alone.

I still don't feel quite ready for the holidays, but at least this year we have a card! Let me know if you need photos and cards too- I have some great options. :)

meet Sweetie. She was at the Great Southwest Scooter Fiesta last weekend out at Joe's Farm Grill in Gilbert, Arizona. I was at the event for ASU Art Museum, but also because it was a fundraiser for the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, and well, I may have mentioned once or twice that I love animals. They were on hand with the big adoption van, too- they adopted out 14 animals on Saturday, which was a record for the van! Sweetie went home to a new family too- and they were already in love when I met them. And can you blame them? Look at this sweet puppy!

It has been a while since I've been doing any real shooting (thanks to a car accident last year) but I miss being at the Arizona Humane Society so much I decided to give it a try yesterday. There are lots of sweet, funny, adorable pups and kitties who need new homes, and it's really gratifying for me to help them- and the people who adopt them- find each other. Here are some of the animals I met yesterday.

(I also got a *really nice, new Tenba rolling bag for my camera, since Cody ate my last one. The Tenba Roadie is awesome!)

DOGumentary: Life with Cody

So for those of you who don't know, we adopted another dog about a month or two ago, from Arizona Humane Society. This is when I first met Cody (then known as Max, which he didn't respond to). An AHS volunteer, Charles, introduced us. I ended up on the floor playing with Cody pretty quickly. Charles always humors me- thanks, C. :)

On our way home on adoption day. I had to bring Luka to AHS to meet him first, and they seemed to get along so well I brought him home. My son Andrew helped with the dogs the first day and although he's not typically a fan of dogs in general, even he fell in love with Cody!

Cody is a Boxer-Pointer mix, and you can really see which parts of him came from each breed. Hound nose, square Boxer feet, and he points! not often, but I've seen it.

Cody is still a puppy- he's only about 3 years old. So he does goofy things. Like sleep half out of his bed trying to get comfy. This was when he still had a bed, that is. He ate it not long after this photo was taken.

Cody has gotten much better about not chewing the furniture (covering it with foil really helped!) and sticking to his toys. We are now getting used to the daily carnage that is Cody's toys (poor Purple Guy.) Cody still seems to be absolutely *shocked* when I want to clean up all the toy-stuffings all over the floor. He's totally offended by my clean-up efforts so I try to leave it as long as I can stand it. He's usually better about it when I can distract him with brand new toys. Which are still less expensive than repairing the furniture, so I'll keep him in new toys for a while.

The boys are getting along so well. Luka even now worries about Cody when he doesn't know where he is in the house- he'll go searching all over to find Cody, and then give him a lick on the face when he does. He's also the rule-enforcer: Cody still likes to do some digging in the yard, but when Luka catches him at it he goes right out and grumbles and snaps at Cody until he stops digging. Luka's the grumpy old man of the house. If he was a person he'd be yelling at the kids next door to stay off our lawn!

We can't normally let Cody on the bed with us at night like we can with Luka, because he just doesn't stay still and it's impossible to sleep with him there. He's like a human 3 year old! But about 5:30 each morning Cody's awake and will jump up with us for a little while. He's finally learning to sleep for a little while longer. On my pillow. (They were really both out cold when I took this!)

The Undertakers: Road's End

I really can't believe I haven't posted this yet! Two weeks ago we finally filmed the trailer for this excellent zombie movie, The Undertakers: Road's End. I was excited to work on this project because the director, Kiven, seemed really cool, and the film isn't a blood-and-guts-slasher-zombie movie, but a highly stylized, comic-book look zombie movie. I'm not an effects makeup artist so the actual zombie costumes were left to someone very talented with foam latex stuff, but I did work with the lead characters, one of whom was Richard Hatch. You may recognize him from Battlestar Galactica (and if you're as old as me, from the first BSG - he was the original Apollo!) (Thanks to Darren for shooting this one for me!)

I wish I could post some of the set photos I got, but we don't want to ruin the surprises. I can tell you that this was one of the most pro, and the most fun, sets I've had the privilege of working on. The cast is super-talented: three young actors from L.A. just brought everything they had to it, veteran actor Edwin Neal, who plays creepy Old Man Johnson, nearly killed me with laughter because he doesn't just do an impression of Christopher Walken, he virtually becomes Christopher Walken (so funny!!!), and of course all of the experienced actors were so gracious and respectful of the younger cast and all of the crew members. The crew rocked- the lighting may be its own character in this film it's that good. And I think the director Kiven and I will be friends for a long time. He ran a tight ship and treated everyone really well despite a couple of 16+ hour days that wore everyone down. We had a great rapport and I really hope the film gets picked up so we can make the whole thing!

Meet Cody.

He's sort of red and brown. I think he's a Boxer-Pointer mix. He definitely has that hound nose and I saw him do the pointing thing once when he was startled (he points like an arrow!) But he also has the Boxer body, and feet!, red color, and playful, Boxer-like personality.

Luka actually is getting along quite well with Cody. He just doesn't like having his picture taken.

Unlike Luka, Cody really enjoys crashing out on the sofas. He is also starting to play more with his chew toys, which will hopefully save the furniture from further abuse. I'm not sure they'll help with his snoring, though!

Cody is about three years old and is amazingly affectionate and sweet. He was clearly someone's pet before we got him from the Arizona Humane Society, but he entered the shelter system having been found as a stray by the AJ police. (Thank you for saving this great animal, guys!) We love him- Cody is going to be a fun addition to our family!

BALLS! and other art

BALLS!

This was an installation set up for about four hours only at the street party last Saturday evening. (I think it was actually called "Balls".) Local company Martha + Mary held a benefit party for ASU Art Museum programs and exhibitions, complete with art installations, food, live bands, a DJ, and, well, balls.

The ball pit was actually intended for the adults, but dang if you don't find kids everywhere these days... ;)

VESPAS!

A group of riders from the East Valley Vespa Club joined us for a while- it was a beautiful day for the ride, too. Many thanks to Glen (Jersey!) for bringing the crowd over. It was great to meet everyone!

KIDS!

yep, lots of 'em. They seemed to really have a good time at the street party, and they totally enjoyed the pool noodles! And, in large part due to our sign, no parents were caught hitting each other with them. Success! :)

I have to admit, I haven't been doing a lot of shooting these days, for a bunch of reasons. But i do keep my skills sharp by volunteering at the Arizona Humane Society as many Saturdays as I can. I meet awesome people there and get to play with all these adorable and fun animals- i love it. i do have a couple of weddings coming up, and a big project that we'll be Twittering live, and maybe even a film treatment in March, so there will be some non-animal photos here soon. really.

You'll have to check the snapfactory blog and follow Mark and me on Twitter: @dianewallace and @jmarkwallace - to catch the big project on Feb. 19th as it happens. We'll have people there to film the shoot from beginning to end, so you can see the whole thing. It will be just like being there with us! We'll be answering questions live on Twitter, and video will be out shortly after showing the whole process. Mark will be shooting and I'll be doing makeup on our four agency models. I'm excited to have a great styling team in Erin Markis and Heather Blaine, who you'll get to meet in video as well.

Ok, you all know that while dogs have owners, cats just have staff. (I know this is true because I used to have two of them, so please don't send me email.) So to be fair to all the cat fans I'm posting a few of the kitties at the AZ Humane Society from earlier today. To be honest, though, I really don't have a good handle on photographing these guys. Sometimes they're cooperative and I get something great, but there are days it's just more difficult...

This is a *beautiful* and very affectionate kitty. A little camera shy, though...

and sometimes they're just too quick! :)

but definitely always loved. This is volunteer Christopher with a spunky new arrival.

I went to the Arizona Humane Society Campus for Compassion in South Phoenix today to start photographing animals who are available for adoption. I hope by having good, clear photos to put online, people will fall in love with them and make them part of their families. I will update photos when I have them- only two today because it was just way too hot this afternoon. Tomorrow morning will be better, I think!

This first portrait is Shelby. She looks like she's part Catahoula, and maybe Lab. She is SO affectionate and friendly! She LOVES to play tug-of-war and chase a ball. She gave me such big hugs she ended up in my lap- right out in the play yard! If she didn't need to be the only pet in the home I'd have brought her home with me today, she's THAT GOOD of a dog. I can't imagine why anyone would have given her up. As much as I love them all, this isn't something I'm going to say a lot- she's seriously an awesome dog. Please someone, make her part of your family!

Look at my pretty coat! My guess is she's about 60 pounds. She'll be a great friend to go hiking with!

This is Lucy. She's a herding type dog. She's amazingly well trained and well-behaved; extremely good on a leash and knows a bunch of commands. She's a smart girl! When I took her out of her kennel, she waited patiently for me to put her leash on and never pulled or rushed or anything. It was just too hot to play!

ok, here are a few images from that WorthingtonFogg CD art project I was fortunate enough to work on. Here's photographer Anthony, walking dangerously close to a spider tree... before we realized there were in fact, a zillion spiders in these desert trees.

Anthony found some great locations- while my iPhone only has this wide angle lens, Anthony shot with both a wide and a telephoto lens. So the guys got a lot of exercise that day!

I recently had another chance to work with a friend and fellow photographer Anthony French on CD art for Tucson band WorthingtonFogg. They're awesome guys and Terrific musicians, and I'm really looking forward to actually getting a copy of the disc once it's available. Of course I did take some iPhone photos while we were shooting, but they just didn't turn out well. I'm not sure the guys want me to post these- they're just such bad quality. Except that you can, in fact, see the big spider I shot while we were in the desert (spider trees, for my Twitter follwers). And that's just too creepy for me to look at every time I see my own site, so I'm not posting that. In fact, I'm going to just delete it. Sorry- I just can't get past the 8 eyes thing...

So, instead of desert set images from the band session (which I may still post after some Photoshop work, but we'll see if I have time for that), I dug up some cool old art images from my archives. Not nearly as exciting, I know. Adding a bee (top photo on the right!) may not make up for the lack of spider tree for some of you. Life just isn't fair sometimes.

If it's Tuesday in August, you'll find me at Brilliant Sky Toys & Books. (ok, it was Tuesday when I took this photo!) We're still looking for kids to be in their new ad campaign. Come by from 10am - noon this next Tuesday to say hello, get a fast image of the kids taken for the contest, and then PLAY WITH LOTS OF TOYS.

We'll also be doing one evening contest session coming up- I'll post the date as soon as I know it- for families who can't make it during the day. Kids who are chosen to be in the ads will each receive a $50 gift certificate to the store and an 8x10 print of any image of them that gets used in the ads.

ok, so I've just posted to my snapfactory fashion portfolio some really great new images with Kevin and Katie in our Metals story (gold, silver and bronze). For the record, yes they really are that beautiful and yes, they do both have better hair than anyone you've ever seen. But final images are never what they appear to be; Kevin and Katie both are the nicest, goofiest and easiest-to-work-with models around. Another 48-hour film challenge this weekend! I'm back with Catbrain Film Factory this time around (click title link to see their site). We drew the Comedy genre this time, and with only 3 minutes total time allowed for the film, we had a very tight, funny movie. Great job everyone, including Nate Yocum, for an outstanding script! (Photo quality isn't great because it was so dark, but I still love my iPhone.)

Last week I had the opportunity to work on a video production for Intel, in their corporate studios. We worked on video for their Embedded website, where their engineers can communicate with one another. They had the cleanest green floor I've ever seen. And I made some new friends, too. :) This is Tony, who works with medical and military stuff, doing his thing for the video. (Shot with my iPhone.)

After learning that Damien and his *adorable* daughter Amberlie have never had formal family portraits taken together, I recruited them to assist me in experimenting with my new Quantum flash. They braved the heat and I think we are all rewarded with some really fun photos.
But really, what are the chances that Amberlie would just happen to do exactly this? (see the skycafe post below)

I'm totally surprised that Qflash lit this- they were on top of a jungle gym at a pretty far distance!

I'm actually sick right now, and sort of bored. But doing stuff makes me sooo tired. i've been debating getting lunch for like, two hours now. So I just went through my iPhone, the one that's soon to be upgraded, replaced, discarded like so many....oh, right. there's just a new iPhone coming out (!) but i digress.
these are just some shots i did recently with my phone; a late night Waffle House break, and my constant companion (accomplice?) Luka. looks like my phone likes to focus far... maybe the new one is better...

Just some of the objects I was happy to shoot for Desert Living Magazine recently. The Garage is featured in the May-June issue, currently on stands. Garage is a totally fun shop in the Mix, with retro toys, candy cigarettes (!) at the candy bar (!), and great couture lines for kids. One of my other favorites, a kids' shirt that says "Marc who?", by Marc Jacobs. And she even has a reach-through window, where you can ride your bike up and buy a Twinkie or an ice cream cone.

That's gonna leave a stain...

I love Joanna because when I say "hey I have this idea for your promo on the sci-fi film you were in and it involves crushing berries with your bare hands, and oh, I need you to sort of do a vampire thing too" she doesn't tell me I'm out of my mind.

Ok, maybe she *thinks* that, but Joanna knows how to pull off this crazy stuff. We did laugh through most of it but got some pretty smokin' images from the session. And shooting with her always makes me think, "hey, I don't suck".

These are my goofy new friends, Damien Salamone and Mohamed "grrrr Imma tiger" Abdalla. Collectively, they own/operate skycafe, the coffee shop located on the second floor of SkySong in Scottsdale. I shot this image as part of a group I did for Perfectify Magazine. I also wrote an article for the June issue of the magazine; part of the cafe proceeds go to support HEAL International, a great non-profit org that Damien started.
